Barrel break in procedure

Post  Wizard on Mon Jul 06, 2009 3:55 pm

How serious is it to follow the barrel break in protocol.

I really have to clean the barrel after every shot for the first 10, then every 5th, then blah, blah, blah.

How serious is that? Will it screw it up if I don't follow that procedure or will it delay the break in time?

The procedure I follow is, clp on a bore snake for the first 15 shots, once every five rounds after that until I get to 35 rounds. then clean it every 20 rds until I reach 200. This will definitely improve your barrel life and accuracy out of the rifle.

Sounds reasonable...I'd do it!

Do you know the theory behind it?

And what's the deal with, when cleaning the barrel not pulling the rod out, but unscrewing the brush and then pulling it out..

Sorry for the 20?'s but I don't mind doing something if it's the right way, I just like to know why.

when a barrel is new there is still machining marks in the land and grooves, when you shot a round it moves the metal around and loosens it....you can guess what happens if it is not cleaned...etc etc
